have raw cake and eat it

The best book I ever read about children and eating was ‘My Child Won’t Eat’ by Carlos Gonzalez. Not because he wrote about raw food or anything - he didn’t. He simply trusts the judgement of the child to decide what is good for him and her and believes that any kind of persuading a child to eat is counter-productive and that if you offer your child a selection of healthy foods the child will select what he or she needs.

I made the mistake of spending hours trying to prepare things that my older son would eat and he is now quite a picky eater, although this is improving since I changed my attitude about it. With my younger son, I put out the food; if he ate it he did and if he did not eat it, he didn’t. Although we changed our diet considerably when he was very little, I have not found either of my children to be any pickier about food with our new, high percentage raw, mainly vegan diet than they were before when we ate most things.

The recipes I have put on the website are those which we eat now and my children (mainly) enjoy. When we first started eating mainly raw food and eliminating many of the foods we were used to eating a large number of my creations ended up in the bin. With trial and error we have found many tasty, staple foods for ourselves. I hope that sharing some of my experiences will save you time and money by providing you with workable recipes that your children will like to eat.

I was interested in digestive enzymes and food raw to an extent, when weaning my first child which was why we ended up buying a champion juicer, which has a homogenising plate and is great for making raw purees as well as nut butters, ice cream and fresh juices. We went back to using it when we started making raw foods. However, it is used less in our house than our fabulous Rhino Blender.

If you want some further inspiration, great recipes and ideas for weaning ans suggestions for including superfoods in you child’s diet ‘Evie’s Kitchen’ by Shazzie is a great read.

Paul Pitchford’s book ‘Healing With Wholefoods’ has a large section about children’s foods including detailed information about how deficiencies can be treated, the effects of different types of dairy for children, foods to be careful with and how food can affect behaviour.
